New Orleans
New Orleans is commonly known as the birthplace of Jazz. It also referred to as “The Melting Pot of Sound”. African Americans formed brass bands. Rhythm was an important part of these bands. Brass instruments were not the only instruments used, but the use of woodwinds and percussion instruments were also apart of the bands. These instruments were utilized in exceptionally creative ways. “ The bands used classical instrument-trumpets, trombones, clarinets, saxophones, and drums-but in unique ways” (DeGraffenreid, Fowler, Gerber, & Lawrence, 2006, p. 196).
